How to Choose

Before you buy

01 · Why not just use your phone?

Phone maps route a car. They do not know your trailer is 13'6" or that you're carrying hazmat. A truck GPS holds your vehicle profile and routes around what you legally cannot take. That is the entire reason to own one.

02 · Garmin or budget?

Garmin's routing database is the difference — it is the one that keeps you off a low bridge. If a wrong turn costs you a permit violation or a bent trailer, the Garmin pays for itself the first time. Budget units are fine as a second screen or a backup.

03 · Screen size is not vanity

You are glancing, not reading. Six inches is enough for most; seven or nine helps if you wear readers or run unfamiliar lanes. Measure your windshield space before you order the 9-inch.

04 · No GPS replaces your own eyes

Every unit here has been wrong about a bridge at some point. Use the routing as your plan and the signs as your authority. Verify posted clearances yourself, every time.
